This video goes over how records at the State Archives are organized. We call this the Record Hierarchy, or the Record Family Tree. Records are both physically organized according to this hierarchy and described in the catalog and finding aids according to that organization. The level of written description in finding aids and the catalog, often referred to as “intellectual organization,” can vary from collection to collection. The individual items in collections, while physically organized, are rarely described specifically. Understanding the organization and description of records helps you not only to navigate the catalog, but to navigate the physical collections in the Search Room as well. This video is the second in a series on using the State Archives of North Carolina’s catalog.
