FULL TRIP! Stagecoach Autonomous Bus AB1 - Ferrytoll to Edinburgh Park - E200MMC AV - YX69 NUO 62002

In 2023 Stagecoach East Scotland launched Autonomous Bus route AB1 connecting Ferrytoll Park & Ride to Edinburgh Park Station with one intermediate stop each way. To run this service 5 ADL Enviro200 MMC buses were converted to run with autonomous driving technology developed in collaboration with CAVForth among many other groups.

This service was initially timetabled at every 30 minutes with 2 buses in service at any one time to achieve this, and the buses would typically run autonomous on the motorway sections and probably over the Forth Road Bridge too. However as passengers numbers started to dwindle the service was cut back to hourly and it got to a point where the autonomous technology was no longer being utilised either.

This video documents a full journey on the AB1 service from Ferrytoll to Edinburgh Park Station 10 days before the service was withdrawn for good. The only passengers on board this journey were myself and my friend who was also recording it from a different seat closer to the back.

The bus is number 2 of the batch, YX69 NUO - 62002 - which was originally new as a regular E200MMC in standard Beachball livery. It's siblings carry reg endings NUH, NUP, NUU and NUV. The future for these buses is unknown at present following the end of the AB1 service, as far as I know they are currently with ADL but that could very well have changed since I saw that information a fair while back now.
