Exiting CA-17 at Bear Creek Road we head to Black Road for a climb up to Skyline Blvd.
Black Road is one of 4 great climbs in the Lexington Reservoir area. Not much for distant views, this is a fun climb that begins at the intersection of Black and Montevina Roads and climbs on up to Skyline Blvd (Hwy 35). We are surrounded and covered by a canopy of tree branches throughout the climb which is a popular route for local cyclists and hikers so take care. Towards the top (at the steepest segment of the climb) we run through a series of 10 sharp switchbacks.
Black is steep with about a 1750 feet in 4.3 miles, but there is a mile of mostly flat in the middle. The first 2 miles are 9% and the last mile or so is more like 10%. There is no shoulder. It's one lane in spots and there are a lot of places with drop-offs and no guard rail. It gets a fair amount of traffic for John Nicholas Trailhead in Sanborn County Park, Black Rd residents, people who live in Las Cumbres, and other places off Skyline.
