He nominated Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) and Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (RA) — but Umar immediately took his hand and pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr, recognizing his seniority, closeness to the Prophet (ﷺ), and unmatched trustworthiness.

The other companions followed — unity was restored, and the first Caliph of Islam was chosen.
