How to improve a tight canter with Kirstin Kelly. All horses have one canter that is tighter and shorter compared with the weaker canter which may be long and flat and hard to shorten. Today's video is giving you some exercises to help lengthen and soften the stride to enable the horse to relax over his back and make a more comfortable stride. Often the canter that is tight will be crooked as this is what stops the horse from being able to open and cover more ground. Improving the tight canter is something that must be done daily to teach the horse to go stright and relax the back and stride. Floating the seat will allow the back to move more freely, then opening the canter by releasing the tension in your core and elbows will start to relax the back and then riding large squares will straighten the horse allowing him to open the stride up.
