These are my two planer flattening sleds.
Initially, I used a single piece of 3/4 inch MDF as my flattening sled, but I was having an issue where
But, the pressure from the rollers on my planer was causing the piece of MDF to bow in the middle leading to a U shape or a curve in the boards I was trying to flatten.
As the piece travelled through the planer the pressure from the rollers was bending the piece of plywood leading to a U shape or a curve in my finished pieces.
My new sleds are made with a piece of ½ inch MDF and I added supports beneath them to make the sled more ridged and prevent it from bowing under the pressure of the rollers.
One thing that I did not do - is glue down a stop block on the end of sled.
I glued a stop block to the first sled I made, but this limited me to planing lumber thicker than ½ an inch thick.
Now, I screw in a stop block when needed depending on the thickness of material I am planing.
And in my experience, the hot glue alone is more than strong enough to hold the boards in place, the stop block just adds security.
