Last year during my travels I found myself in the Sand Hills of North Carolina. As I was driving north on U. S. Highway 1 I found myself at one of the long time NASCAR Race Tracks that has sat silent for the better part of the last two decades. The North Carolina Motor Speedway at Rockingham is best remembered by NASCAR Fans as "The Rock." I stopped and spent a few minutes walking around the outside of the Old Speedway and spent a few minutes reading the names, of race winner that are carved into the giant boulders. Names like, Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, David Pearson and Bobby Allison.
After leaving The Rock I made a quick stop at the Ellerbe Cemetery in the Nearby town of Ellerbe, North Carolina. Here in this small cemetery, rests the 1973 BASCAR Winston Cup Champion Car owner, L. G. Dewitt. In the 16-years that he was a Winston Cup Owner, L. G. Dewitt's cars competed in 530 Cup races and found victory lane 12 time. Without a doubt his best season was in 1973 when with Benny Parson as his driver the pair won the NASCAR Winston Cup Championship.
