Semi-Auto Trash Collection in the Piedmont Hills

We are back in Piedmont, this time following the trash collection for this unique collection style out in the Bay. The crew was great and deserve a special mention here; thanks guys! This area is completely surrounded by Oakland (and Waste Management) from all sides, but is still technically considered "Oakland Hills", hence the funky title.

Way out in the Oakland hills city named Piedmont (completely surrounded by Oakland and Waste Management of Alameda County), Richmond Sanitary Service (Republic Services in disguise) runs semi-automated routes picking up the narrow streets and tight sidewalks of the city. Originally, this area was backyard service, where drivers would talk a shoulder can up hundreds of stairs to collect refuse from the doorsteps of the residence.

As time progressed, a push to make collection less labor intensive resulted in a roll out of carts across the city. However, many residents still pay extra for the backyard service. This, coupled with the tight streets making this route nearly impossible to fully automate, resulted in Republic Services using rear loaders to collect the route.
