Quanno tramonta 'o sole, Italian slow waltz, mandolin/tenor guitar instrumental

This is a popular Neapolitan song, which I play as an instrumental slow waltz on mandolin with tenor guitar backing. I learned this from the playing of the late Matteo Casserino, mainstay of Caffe Trieste in San Francisco, whose recording of this tune is available as free download from Bruce Zweig's site, where there is also a hand-written transcription of the melody line and chords:

Matteo's version was also covered by The Hot Frittatas and included in Sheri Mignano's book "Mandolin Melodies". However, Matteo slightly misnamed the tune, as did Sheri in her book.

Under its correct title "Quanno tramonta 'o sole" (or "Quando tramonta il sole" in high Italian), it is a Neapolitan standard, covered by all and sundry. It was also the title of a 1955 movie, based on the life of its composer Salvatore Gambardella. I have used stills from it for my video. In the film, the title song was sung by Giacomo Rondinella.

The song was written in 1911 by Ferdinando Russo and Salvatore Gambardella. The lyrics are:
