(31 Jan 2017) An Iranian PhD student at Germany's Hasso Plattner Institute shared with the Associated Press on Tuesday what impact the US travel ban had on her work.
Mana, who asked for her last name to be withheld, fearing it could complicate getting visas to the US in future, said she had her visa and tickets booked to fly to California in February but was forced to abandon her plans following the US travel ban announcement on Friday.
Instead of putting together the final preparation for her trip, where she was going to update fellow students at Stanford University on her research, she spent the weekend talking on the phone with family and friends from Iran who are also affected by US President Donald Trump's executive order.
Her plan had been to stay in Paolo Alto for a month to conduct her own research project on how her field, design thinking, was being taught in the US.
Speaking from her office in Potsdam, Mana said that although she was upset her plans were ruined, others living in the US were in a much worse situation.
The director of the institute where Mana is doing her PhD, Christoph Meinel, suggested the restrictions imposed on seven Muslim-majority countries will also mean the US will lose out on the broad exchange of ideas that helps drive innovative research.
