Since I've noticed some compressed reuploads of the Twitter version I shared of this video from last year, this is an HD export of my reconstruction of the original ending to the 1988 storyboard for Hiroshi Harada's iconic adaption of the Suehiro Maruo manga Shōjo Tsubaki. While many people know Harada's adaption as being a close rendition of Maruo's story, it was originally envisioned in the late-80s as a personal retelling that drew heavily from 1950s contemporary dramas. Harada pitched this original version to the Art Theatre Guild, a film company that was prolific in the Japanese new wave scene for how it produced Terayama's features alongside other cinematic staples like Death by Hanging and Funeral Parade of Roses. By the time Harada approached the ATG however, they ceased providing financing for independent productions. While Harada did a complete storyboard for the film that was backed by full-color illustrations, only the boards for the ending scene, a montage set to the Doji Morita song The Girl of Celluloid from her 1977 album A Boy (ア・ボーイ), have since surfaced on Harada's blog. This is a rough reconstruction of how that ending would've played out, giving further insight into Harada's vision for the film.
This edit was made to be a section for my ongoing documentary project Magic Lantern Dramas, an in-depth analysis of the history of Harada's animations going from his earliest short films in the late-70s to his ongoing work on Zashikiro.
