The story of how the well-known ballad Willie O’ Winsbury acquired this tune is well recorded: Andy Irvine, then of Sweeney’s Men, liked the words in the Child Ballads but then looked up the wrong tune. However, his version of the song was a popular choice for many late 1960s folk groups; and, with words rewritten by Richard Thompson, became a great Fairport Convention song. We cannot be the first people to look up the Child Ballads’ words that originally accompanied the air – those of False Footrage. The problem is that it is a very long song, even though it has a great story (indeed a potential Hollywood blockbuster). Pete and Michael decided to have a go at an abridged version, with about a third of the full set of verses ... and an international set of instruments, including fiddle, Ugandan harp-lyre, oud, and samisen, all played by Aaron.
