After the government attempted to bring in an order seen as a brazen attempt to curb freedom of the press in an election year, NDTV's Ravish Kumar on Tuesday said, "in the name of fake news, they're tightening the noose around us." Speaking at the Press Club of India, Mr Kumar, in a scathing speech, said if you take away accreditation from the reporter, then you're sending a message to spread fear. After top editors and opposition parties accused the government of trying to control the media, Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani tweeted that she was open to suggestions on how to modify the order and tackle fake news. It wasn't enough. Around 10 minutes later, the Prime Minister's Office said the controversial order was withdrawn.
