Today, the threat posed by ‘extremism’ is making headlines. Whether Islamophobia or Islamism, ‘far-right’ populists or Antifa, religious conservatives or eco-warriors, extremism is charged with jeopardising democracy and used to justify reining-in hard-won freedoms. In this lecture Inaya Folarin Iman sheds some light on the term 'Islamophobia.' Where does this term come from, what does it mean and why has it been so widely adopted by political parties and institutions?

Critics argue that the concept of Islamophobia acts as a new form of blasphemy law, which in the name of combating racial bigotry ends up constraining legitimate criticism of a culture, religion or political ideology such as Islamism. Where do the boundaries lie between resisting intolerance directed at minority groups and tolerating all views and ideas?
