We Found Pitting on Our Shafts—Now What?

In this episode, everything that could go sideways…pretty much did. We started by inspecting our two-part propeller shafts and found serious pitting on one.

That left us with a big decision: replace it or risk it.

Then, as part of our Cummins engine repower, we pulled the props off to get them re-pitched for the new setup. But the chaos didn’t stop there—while we were tackling the shafts, cutlass bearings, and rudders, our second set of propellers was actually stolen right out of the yard. Cue the police report.

We also realized the cutlass bearings Blaine ordered were the wrong size (because why not add one more headache to the list?). In the end, the shafts were replaced, the rudders were removed, cleaned up, painted, and reinstalled, and our freshly tuned props finally went back on—once we got replacements.
