The "Sputnik" lock picking tool was developed almost forty years ago by a criminal in Germany so that he could quickly open pin tumbler locks. Today it is used by government agencies and some locksmiths to open most pin tumbler locks in a minute or less.
Oliver Diederichsen demonstrates its use at the LockFest 2016 in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. The tool relies upon a series of wire probes that allow the manipulation of each of the pins within the lock. It is especially useful for bypassing anti-pick pins.
The tool got its name from the design of the original Russian Sputnik satellite. The criminal that developed the original tool was investigated by Manfred Goth, one of the best known forensic analysts in Europe regarding locks and keys.
