Vladimir Davidovich Ashkenazy (1937 -)
Soviet pianist and conductor. He was born in Gorky in 1937 into a family of musicians. He started playing the piano at the age of six and entered the Central Music School of the Moscow Conservatory at the age of nine. He won the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition in 1956 and the Tchaikovsky International Competition in 1962.
