Learning English Podcast - Workers Rescued, Luxury Water, Public School Program

On today's podcast, Dan Novak and Ashley Thompson host the show and Dan tells listeners what they will hear on the program. First, Dan Novak has a report adapted by Dan Friedell on the rescue of 41 road workers who were trapped for 17 days in a tunnel. The workers where fed and given oxygen through a pipe for much of that time. There were celebrations and media reports once the miners were released from the tunnel.

Then, Andrew Smith has a story about the growing market for luxury water. The water comes from places like Hawaiian lava flows or the Amazon jungle. The water is further defined by its TDS content (the amount of minerals dissolved in it).

On the education report, Anna Matteo has a story about an experimental public school in Washington, D.C. She tells about how a student in Deanwood Radio Broadcast Youth Journalism Program interviewed Magic Johnson, a basketball legend and co-owner of the Washington Commanders football team. Johnson gave the student a scholarship for asking him a question. One of the young people who went through the program and then received a full college scholarship said she thinks there will be more Black journalists in the future.

Then, Anna and Dan have a discussion about the program which is for young people in Wards 7 and 8 in Washington which are said to be high-crime areas in the city.

Finally, John Russell uses a story from Greg Stachel about research aimed at growing crops on the moon to discuss the word "cultivation." The word is used in specific ways by native speakers and John gives insight into its proper usage. Then Dan and Ashley sign off.
