Across Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia, thousands of Black migrants and refugees are being arrested, deported, and abandoned in the desert — far from major cities, out of public view.
These secret operations were uncovered by Lighthouse Reports and partner media outlets in the cross-border investigation “Desert Dumps.” Their findings reveal how European Union funding and intelligence sharing may be enabling human rights abuses against people trying to reach Europe.

In this interview, investigative journalist Beatriz Ramalho da Silva speaks about the team’s year-long effort to document what was happening on the ground. The project involved over 40 journalists from eight media outlets and went on to win the IJ4EU Impact Award 2025 for its groundbreaking reporting.
