A Pirate's Song by Doug Newman
With footage off the coast of Key West. I wrote this song about ten years ago.
A Pirate's Song
As a young lade of six I dreamed of sailing round
aboard a mighty tall ship perhaps the Indies bound
for adventures there I'd find away across the mighty seven seas
When I was only 12 I slipped and stowed away
from my dear home in Glasgow next to a Scottish bay
I never knew I'd never ever see my lovely Mommy or her face again
It was a sailor's life a sailor's life for me so free
It was a sailor's life upon the seven seas
At eighteen years I ran a foul the law in Portugal
for stealing food when hungry and starving don't you know
it's easy to say you'd never
when you're belly's full
and you know you're not alone
I guess I fell in with a crowd
perhaps a bit shady
aboard a merchant's ship
least that's what they told me
And soon enough they plundered
and branded me Pirate to boot
with all their loot
And I was a Pirate then
A Pirate of the seas
I was a Pirate
a Pirate of the seven seas
I suppose I had a bit of fun gallivanting 'round
except for all the orphan's I knew we left aground
for every sailor that we met
who wouldn't part with what we said was ours
and then join up with us
and all I saw
reflecting from the deep blue seas
was the face of a Pirate
a Pirate of the seven seas
the only words I give to you
in my own defense
I never killed another
though was an accomplice
And so I know deserve to swing
from this here
misbegotten tree
as a Pirate
yes a Pirate of the sea
as a Pirate that I never meant to be
as a Pirate won't you please please forgive me
a Pirate
a Pirate of the seven seas
