Why Do Ignition Coils Fail
In this video I am going to talk about what causes ignition coils to fail, how long do they last and common signs of failure.
Technically there are a lot of things that can cause ignition coil failure but I have listed the 7 most common ones best from my experience as a mechanic.
Wear and Tear: Over time, the constant exposure to high voltage can wear out the coil's insulation and windings, leading to a breakdown.
Heat and Vibration: Excessive engine heat and vibrations can damage ignition coils. Heat can cause the insulation to break down, while vibration can lead to physical damage.
Moisture and Corrosion: Moisture can seep into the coil and cause short circuits. Corrosion can also occur, particularly at the connections and terminals, impeding the flow of electricity.
Electrical Overstress: Sudden voltage surges in the electrical system, often due to faulty wiring or incompatible components, can overload and damage the ignition coil.
Poor Quality Materials: Cheaper, lower-quality coils may not be built to handle the stresses of regular use and are more prone to failure.
Faulty Spark Plugs or Spark Plug Wires: When spark plugs or their wires are worn or failing, they can put additional strain on ignition coils, leading to premature failure.
Oil Leaks: In some cases, oil leaks can lead to ignition coil failure if the oil contaminates the coil and causes a short circuit.
