I acquired this instrument in the summer of 2001 after finding it on eBay. It has been provisionally identified by several experts as a Simpson of London instrument, dating from some time after 1770 and before 1800. There are not many original English Guittars remaining in an original unrestored condition; this one has a repair to the headstock, which is incorrect in design, presumably replacing a broken original, but is otherwise unmodified. The original bridge is stored, as a new one had to be made to provide the correct action. I strengthened a top crack by patching internally using salmon leather (a very strong, light natural material) glued in place. It is now tuned to full tension, in C, and retains its pitch very well - in this case, for several months of storage, requiring only a small adjustment to couple of strings.
