City of the Future, a Glimpse into Mobility

My latest documentary, titled 'The City of the Future’ - A Glimpse into Mobility", is now complete. The traditional way we approach mobility and traffic infrastructure can feel limiting. In recent years, policymakers tackling mobility issues have found themselves dealing with a wider range of concerns. Similarly, policymakers in other fields bump into constraints posed by mobility and traffic infrastructure. In my documentary, we delve into this broader view of the challenges surrounding limited urban space.

The elements of (healthy) soil, physical networks, a thriving city, and (circular) economy, when aligned, form the foundation for the neighborhoods of tomorrow. But how do we ensure everything functions smoothly? What can we do about traffic? And why are mobility plans still developed separately? It is clear that we cannot focus solely on mobility anymore; we need to consider the myriad of interconnected issues shaping our cities, right down to the streets themselves.

Renowned architect Floris Alkemade shared some insightful thoughts on this: Instead of rushing to answers, we should take the time to explore the questions. Recognising that our time raises new and different questions means we must resist the urge to default to old solutions. It is all about understanding the evolving questions and seizing the opportunities they present to make meaningful interventions. This approach may seem radical, Floris said, but it is grounded in rationality, logic, and effectiveness.
