Lady Antonia Fraser is one of Britain’s most acclaimed historical biographers and the author of landmark works such as Mary Queen of Scots and Marie Antoinette. She is also a judge for the ELHB Historical Biography Prize, which was named after her mother, Elizabeth Longford.

The ELHB Brief Lives Award is a £2000 essay prize for younger writers. Inspired by John Aubrey’s Brief Lives, the 2025 award invites essays of 3,000 words or fewer on a historical figure—or figures—of lasting significance. Judged by a panel of eminent historians and biographers, the winner will receive their prize at an award ceremony at the National Portrait Gallery.
