In 2021, Science Gallery Dublin partnered with Accenture’s global R&D and innovation centre, The Dock, on a Curator-in-Residency programme, that commissioned international artists to co-create work mutually benefiting both the scientific research and the artistic practice, and focused on taking a deeper look at how AI is increasingly being used to make decisions that impact our lives. The result was the piece in BIAS titled ‘Most Likely To Succeed’ and to create this interactive installation, artists Risa Puno and Alex Taylor worked with researchers at Accenture Labs to understand the challenges and possible solutions of making AI fairer and less biased.
To mark the culmination of this partnership, Science Gallery Dublin and Accenture’s The Dock brought together an international panel to discuss AI and fairness, and how they can be defined. How can we ensure that AI systems themselves, and the decisions based on their predictions, are fair? And how should we define ‘fairness’ in the first place?
The online event was hosted by Science Gallery and Accenture Labs @ The Dock, and featured Medb Corcoran, Managing Director of Accenture Labs Dublin, in a live conversation with interactive installation artist Risa Puno, and Milo Phillips-Brown of Oxford’s Institute for Ethics in AI. Dave Lewis, Associate Professor at the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College Dublin, moderated the discussion.
