The 2014 season saw the points system get another unpopular change, as the win-and-you're-in playoff system was introduced to the NASCAR Cup Series. This change coincided with some unexpected winners, such as Aric Almirola, who won a rain-shortened race at Daytona, and A.J. Allmendinger, who got his first win at Watkins Glen. Jeff Gordon continued a late-career surge, earning 4 wins and the most points of any driver. Kevin Harvick began the latter stage of his career as he moved from Richard Childress Racing to Stewart-Haas Racing. This change would coincide with immediate success, as Kevin Harvick would win 5 races and hold off Ryan Newman to become the first NASCAR playoffs champion.
