This is the 10th and final episode of my 'Across Baffin Island' documentary film series 'Man and his Dog Alone in the Arctic'. I walk on glare ice and complete my traverse of Akshayuk Pass when oddly enough, I find a Parks Canada chair. My dog Buck and I then ventured onto the sea ice again where we'd continue travelling towards the Inuit Hamlet of Pangnirtung. Though not as much of a threat as in the first days of the trip, Polar Bears were a concern again now that I was back on the on the sea ice. I pushed to make distance that evening (Day-16) and, when I finally got to camp, I was shocked when I realised that my trailer-sledge had broken off. It was a potentially dangerous situation and I had to retrace my footsteps for a ways before I was reunited with it. It was truly relieving that I was able to find it as it held my tent poles. I'd been so happy once I finished the pass and I beat myself up a little for celebrating too early. I still had many kilometres of Arctic wilderness to traverse.
The tight valley of the pass had opened up into Pangnirtung Fjord now and the scenery was more wide open. I could see out of the Fjord to the horizon and I got some good weather on Day-17. Come evening, I was only about 4km from town and I could see it in the distance. However, things got a little scary again when I had to set up in a strong wind and the snow conditions were very low. Low snow makes it harder to adequately stake my tent I was relieved after getting it up.
I compleated my short walk to town the following day to finish my trip on Day-18. I checked into Inns North's Auyuittuq Lodge and spent some time checking out town and even met a couple people I stayed in touch with. I don't share it in the video but the weather got bad and all flights were grounded for four days. I ended up spending four more days in town which was actually pretty welcome in the end. The people and their stories and the northern communities are a big part of the northern experience.
In all it was a truly amazing trip and the scenery and story of the land and its people truly resonated with me. It left me longing for another trip north.
