What causes hives? When your body is exposed to something, either through breathing it in or eating or drinking it, or having it touch your skin, there are cells called mast cells. These cells release histamine, and that histamine causes your skin to cause hives, essentially welts. And what happens is histamine causes your blood vessels to go from being small to being big, in that sense, blood to the area, and cause the swelling.
Now, if the hives are really bad, you can try something like Zyrtec, Claritin, or antihistamines that can make the hives go down. If the hives are also associated with throat closing or symptoms that are scary, you may want to take what's called an EpiPen. And if they keep happening, you might want to go see an allergist or get an allergy test.
