The tune is also titled "Wheir must our good man Lay?" I have no idea what either title means!
The tune appears in Henry Atkinson's 1694 manuscript. It was included in John Walsh's "Complete Country Dancing-Master, Volume the Fourth" published in 1740 as the tune "Black and Gray" for the dance A Trip to Kilburn. The tune "Black and Gray" was collected in 1695, but it was set in A modal in Walsh's collection. The tune is also included in the McFarlane Manuscript, "A Collection of Scotch Airs with the latest Variations" c. 1741. So, for this tune to have variations, it must have been around for a bit and quite popular.
Here's my take on this 1694 tune. I'm setting it in G modal. It sounds so much like a variety of modal tunes from Appalacia.
