In this joint keynote, Dr. Kumar and Mrs. Sharma explore how Hindu mythology offers a profound ecological vision rooted in the concept of dharmic balance and gratitude to Mother Earth. Focusing on the symbolic and spiritual significance of the coconut—known as nariyal among the Indo-Fijian community—the presentation reflects on its divine origin in the myth of Trishanku, where the coconut tree serves as a bridge between realms.
Drawing from the Sanskriti tradition, the speakers highlight how Hindu practices promote purification of the mind and body to fulfill one’s dharmas (duties) and repay one’s rins (debts), thereby contributing to a sustainable and harmonious society. The keynote proposes that in this post-anthropocentric era, fostering interfaith dialogue is vital for unifying diverse cultural and spiritual frameworks toward environmental conservation—particularly of coconuts and nature in Fiji and the Pacific.
