Despite many years and hundreds of virtual laps on various game consoles, nothing prepares you for the reality of driving a lap of the Nordschleife. Learning the circuit on the Xbox is a help but all it gives you are visual cues and an idea of what comes next. The real deal is an assault on the senses and the first time out is a nerve shredding ordeal when you're in your own car and you need to make the 500 mile journey back home. This was compounded by the fact we were there on the busiest day of the year over the Easter Break. A certain motoring journalist said you were not a true petrol head until you'd bought an Alfa Romeo, I'll add to that and say you're not a true petrol head until you driven at least one lap of the Green Hell.
