Remembering Noynoy Part 1: Ang Love Letter na Bumago sa Buhay ni PNoy

Part 1:

In 2010, my home network, ABS-CBN, assigned me to cover #NoynoyAquino’s presidential bid for “The Correspondents.” I have covered national campaigns for different news and current affairs programs, but that specific show proved to be one of the most memorable. One main reason was being able to produce an emotional, once-in-a-lifetime story featuring a then-senator—the son of whom Filipinos also regarded as modern heroes—about to become the country’s most powerful man.

From that interview 11 years ago, here’s one story worth retelling today: Ninoy Aquino, while behind bars during martial law, wrote to a 13-year-old Noynoy, begging his son to take on the padre de pamilya role. “I readily answered to my dad’s admonition to take care of my mom and siblings,” Noynoy told me. “I was about to graduate grade school at that time, but I already viewed that as a serious commitment.” 💖

Such commitment transcended over time, as Noynoy went on to win the elections and become our 15th president. Inspired by his parents, Ninoy and former president Cory—the faces of “people power”—he was assuming the bigger responsibility of fathering a nation. It was a role he could only take on humbly—starting with his preference to be called #PNoy, as a way of reaching out closer to the masses. 🇵🇭

So in this first episode of my personal project “Remembering Noynoy,” I'd like to share a peek of that precious moment in TV history. May his life inspire us all about the real meaning of servant-leadership.🤍👏🏼
