Those older laptops can be brought back to extrtemely good performance for very cheap! In this case here we spent exactly 48$ with shipping included to upgrade the i3 3110M to a nice i5 3210M, add another 4GB of RAM bringing the total to 8GB and putting a 120GB SSD in there!+

Any SSD will be compatible, so no need to worry about that, for the RAM you can simply get a 4GB stick of DDR3 SODIMM RAM. This is the only spec that you need to look for, the frequency doesn't matter and be it LDIMM or a normal dimm it doesn't matter, low powered just means that it runs with a bit less voltage.
The specific model used in the video was a Toshiba Satellite Pro C50-A-1EM but the tutorial is valid for every C50-A and in general for the C50 series, plus it gives some general guidelines for every laptop of that time period.
