salsa is a latin music style that developed in the 1960s in new york, based on previous styles that came from Cuba - mambo, son cuban, cha cha cha... with influences from Colombia and Puerto Rico.
the role of the piano in salsa music called Montuno - a pattern that repeats itself but the hallmark of all salsa styles is the bass pattern (Tumbao) which palys on the 2,5 , 4 beats
another important elemant in salsa music is the rhythm pattern called clave, which is actually the heart and the soul of the rhythm.
