Many Chris-Crafts have Paragon HF7 and HJ7 transmissions from 1962-1968. They have an interesting procedure on how to adjust the reverse band and the easiest way is to have the engine idling in neutral. Adjust reverse band adjustment screw in until the transmission just starts to engage into reverse. Back off 1/2 turn and tighten jam screw.
