Flamenco Rhythm & Compás Demystified | A Complete Overview of the Different Compases in Flamenco

Can you tell me how many different flamenco compases there are? I want to to make your flamenco life easier by giving you an overview of flamenco from the perspective of the compás. I'll do some cleaning by explaining that there are not as many different flamenco compases as you might think. I know that sometimes learning flamenco can be overwhelming, so what if I told you that in a certain way, there are only 4 really different compasses?
More than a specific compás, each palo a compás uses a specific type of compás.

A specific COMPÁS and a specific PALO are two very different things.
The compás type refers to the rhythmic cycle that a palo uses.
There are many palos in flamenco, but not so many compases:

You know that the flamenco repertoire consists of palos, like soleá, tientos, alegría, siguiriya, bulería, guajira, fandango, etc. There are litterally dozens of palos, but are there dozens of different compases, like one per palo? Luckily not!

Only 3 big categories:
yellow compases
red compases
mixed compases
4 big families:
in 3-beat
in 4-beat
in 6-beat
in 12-beat

And only 9 different compás types in total with 3 different types of 12 beats: soleá, siguiriya, guajira

the multidimensional troublemakers: bulería compás and tanguillo compás.

There are palos without a compás, but each palo a compás of the repertoire that uses compás find a place in at least one of these categories.

Be careful not to confuse either PALO, COMPÁS, and PALMAS PATTERN!
