There are three main types of weeds in a lawn: broadleaves, sedges, grasses. Grassy weeds are the most difficult to control because getting a grass out of a grass is not easy. I have two videos this week concerning grass identification. I apologize in advance for my lack of professional videography skills. I am getting better, but I still have a lot to learn obviously. I did mention in the video that I would show you a carpetgrass seedhead, but then I got distracted. Carpetgrass seedheads have a V-shaped seed stalk at the very top plus one more just underneath the V ... kind of like this: V/ The texture of carpetgrass seedhead is a lot like a crabgrass seedhead (as seen in the video), but this V/ shape really sets it apart. While we're talking about V-shaped seedheads, we MUST mention Bahiagrass seedheads. Bahiagrass is the grass that infamously has the V-shape. Period. No arm underneath it (like carpetgrass), just a V. Period. We control bahiagrass with our normal program so it's not a relevant one for my customers to learn. Carpetgrass on the other hand takes special selective herbicides to control. Dallisgrass (in a residential lawn) must be killed with a non-selective herbicide, which results with a dead spot. There are ways to suppress it, but the only way to achieve 100% eradication is making a dead spot. You can reach 80+% success with spot spraying Tribute Total on dallisgrass, but, you must be ok with not getting 100% control. Crabgrass is very easy to prevent, and therefore is not very notable except for the fact that everyone calls dallisgrass, "crabgrass".
