EXTERIOR
The name SsangYong means ‘twin dragons’ in oriental legend, and arguably you are more likely to encounter ‘twin dragons’ on the road than the sublime and rather quirky Mk1 Musso! Svelte and streamlined, this almost inconceivable survivor has covered a mere 30,225 miles from new and is a cult classic. Designed by renowned Ken Greenley, whose other achievements include exotica like the Aston Martin Virage and Bentley Continental R, the Musso received a gold award in the IBCAM British Steel Auto Design Awards at the 1994 Birmingham International Motor Show. Finished in Jasper Green Metallic, (Code C O), the factory applied paintwork is stunning and boasts a deep uniform shine throughout. All body panels are pin straight with no dings or dents and only a few very minor touched in scratches and stone chips, utterly insignificant. Supplying dealer number plates and rear screen sticker remain, as do all exterior badges and labels such as the fuel flap sticker and 4WD Electric sticker as fitted to the offside front wing only. The underside is preserved in superb structural condition with no welding or repairs ever carried out, almost unheard of for an aging Korean off roader! This car has been garaged from new and remains in incredible condition, totally unmolested and worthy of the accolade ‘time warp’.
INTERIOR
Rugged yet well appointed. This high specification SE Musso is swathed in soft Grey velour upholstery which is in pristine condition. The plush and very comfortable seats are spotless and show no notable wear. The carpets are super-clean and free from markings and the door cards and perfect headlining are damage free. The interior trim and dashboard are fully intact albeit with some rather crude fitment to sections, exactly as they were made! All equipment, gauges and displays operate seamlessly including the factory fitted Clarion stereo and the switchable transmission from 2WD to 4WD high and low range. The high driving position and masses of space further add to this oldschool off roaders appeal. The absolutely cavernous boot area is immaculate. Having covered just 30,225 miles with one private owner from new who utterly cherished the vehicle, it is difficult to comprehend a better survivor existing.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Musso’s star is under the bonnet! SsangYong collaborated with Mercedes Benz in the development of the Musso and most significantly in the engine department. Legendary for robustness, the 2.9 litre Mercedes Benz five-cylinder diesel engine producing 94bhp and 181Nm maximum torque for tremendous pulling power. The engine performs beautifully and is surprisingly quiet and extremely capable with an impressive braked towing capacity of 2300kg. The Borg Warner five-speed manual gearbox is robust and the Shift-on-the-Fly selectable 2WD/4WD system allows you to select drive modes on the move at speeds up to 44mph with operational dash lights.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The standard spoked alloy wheels with chromed centre caps are in pristine condition and brand new premium 235/75 R15 Nangkang NK4X 4WD all-terrain tyres have just been fitted in January 2026. The braking system incorporates discs to all four wheels and offers effective and safe stopping power.
HISTORY FILE
British design, Mercedes power and Korean care. Registered new on 1st August 1996 and supplied by R. N. Golden in Holmfirth, a franchise dealer holding the brands for Subaru, Isuzu and the prestigious SsangYong. The vehicle was pre-registered to the dealership and just one day later sold to the only private owner, Mr Livesey. The condition of this ultimate rare survivor is testament to the owner who kept the vehicle religiously garaged and utterly pampered. Having covered a genuine 30,225 miles from new, this example must be amongst the best, if not the best! All servicing is up to date with most recent service in January 2026. The original book pack with service book and both sets of keys are present along with a file of invoices and an original sales and specification brochure.
Designed and produced in collaboration with Daimler-Benz, this Mercedes driven off-roader is extremely capable and you could flippantly claim to drive a Korean G-Wagon!
