On this sacred Krishna Jayanthi, we bring you a musical treasure — an unforgettable concert of Madurai Mani Iyer, held in Jamshedpur in 1961. Every phrase of Mani Iyer’s voice carries a rare sweetness, every turn of Lalgudi’s bow answers with divine grace, and the rhythmic tapestry woven by Ramabhadran and Vilvadri Iyer enlivens the stage with joyous vitality.

Among the many jewels in this concert, his rendition of "Thaye Yashodha", is a moment of transcendence — a vision of the divine child playing in Yashoda’s courtyard, alive in sound. On this day when we celebrate Krishna, it feels as though Mani Iyer himself brings the deity before us in music. When Mani Iyer lingers on the words “kalinil silambu”, he does not merely sing — he paints. Each repetition becomes a brushstroke, delicate yet insistent, until we can almost see the child Krishna, anklets chiming as he takes each mischievous step. The silambu is no longer just an ornament on his feet; it becomes the very pulse of devotion, the heartbeat of music itself.

With every cycle of the neraval, Krishna seems to wander further — from Yashoda’s courtyard into the streets, from one home to the next, carrying joy, laughter, and the promise of divine play. We hear the jingling bells echo through the village, slipping into every doorway, filling every heart with delight. In Mani Iyer’s voice, Krishna’s walk becomes eternal, an unbroken procession of sound and surrender.

Even in its incomplete form, this concert lets us glimpse the ecstatic flow of raga, bhava, and laya that made Madurai Mani Iyer a legend for eternity.
