Vishwamitra was a famous sage of the Vedic period. He is counted among the Saptarishis. Before adopting the Rishi religion, he was a mighty Kshatriya king. His former name was Raja Kaushik. It is said that Vishwamitra was not a Brahmin by birth. Once he met Maharishi Vashishtha and then he started penance. By taking knowledge of Vedas and Puranas, he became a great sage. Vishwamitra was rich in penance. Gayatri Mata was perfect to him and he had received her complete blessings. Vishwamitra did impossible tasks like new creation, sending Trishanku to heaven etc. and attaining the post of Brahmarishi. Vishwamitra ji had a vision of Gayatri Mantra. Gayatri Mantra present in the third chapter of Rigveda was composed by Vishwamitra. Most of the stories related to Vishwamitra's life are described in Valmiki Ramayana.
