Edward Elgar’s Chanson de nuit – yin to the yang of the sunny Chanson de matin, and perhaps sometimes overlooked for that reason – paints a vivid picture of a nightime landscape. Although small in scale, this piece, published in 1897, comes from the same musical imagination as Elgar’s Nimrod – the ninth ‘Enigma’ variation – which was written a year or two later.
