Restorer Lance Reed describes the current condition of a rare, 57-inch tall Cunningham Matchless Player Piano from 1926. Uprights today are no longer made in this large a size.
The Matchless Cunningham -- with or without a player mechanism installed -- was the flagship upright model during the 1920s of the Philadelphia-based Cunningham piano builder . The piano must have had an amazing sound when new, competitive with that of a grand piano.
Cunningham Piano still operates in Philadelphia, and now offers an instrument under the Cunningham name that is essentially manufactured in Asia. This 1926 Matchless Cunningham is a particularly poignant example of American piano building at its height in around 1920. No upright instruments made today have the presence suggested by this unrestored antique American instrument.
