An episode of ITN’s long-running travelogue series, “Roving Report,” focusing on the recent growth of soccer in the United States, airing in October 1970
Focusing particularly on the city of Atlanta, home of the North American Soccer League’s Atlanta Chiefs, this feature includes interviews with NASL Commissioner Phil Woosnam; Chiefs General Manager Dick Cecil: Chiefs coach Vic Rouse; and recent native-born signee Sonny Carter, who today is better known as Manley L. Carter, Jr., a U.S. astronaut who flew on the space shuttle. Carter would play three seasons with the Chiefs
Cecil’s remarks are particularly interesting, in that only weeks earlier the club was balking at posting a performance bond for the 1971 season. A supporters group raised over $77,400, however, convincing the Atlanta Braves baseball team (owners of the Chiefs) to keep the club alive
The report also includes film of the Emery University soccer team in training, as well as snippets of youth soccer matches
