Labor Senate Leader Penny Wong has slammed the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in a Senate estimates hearing for not being able to immediately provide details about their knowledge of the Western Sydney land deal.
Asked whether they knew when Phil Gaetjens first discussed the audit officer’s report with Infrastructure Department boss Simon Atkinson, Simon Duggan responded they would have to “get information on that”.
“Oh really, you’ve really come this underprepared Mr Duggan? Or is this simply… not cooperating?” Ms Wong responded.
“I am actually astounded, how can you come to this committee with this issue... did you prepare for estimates?”
Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce also said it was necessary to “get to the bottom” of how the government paid $30 million for land which was worth $3 million.
“If people want to do something as blatant and stupid as that, then expect to be investigated and expect heads to roll,” he said.
The Australian Federal Police also told estimates today they had not been asked by the Audit Office to investigate any matter on any occasion in the past 20 years.
