What is the Difference Between ESTE and ISTO in Brazilian Portuguese?

Pronouns in Brazilian Portuguese - Do you know when to use 'este' and 'isto' in Portuguese, since both pronouns are equivalent to 'this' in English? What is the difference between them? And how about 'esse' and 'isso', 'aquele' and 'aquilo'? I have seen some students mixing them up.
