Jhallaar is an irrigation method which is operated with oxen or bulls to lift canal water from lower ground lever to higher level of land. Cattle play very important role in the life of farmers. They not only provide food but also support in farms to complete different task with ease. Bulls, oxen or cows are very helpful in traditional irrigation method. This ancient water irrigation system was very common in Punjab decades ago but now these old systems are replaced with new and modern irrigation technologies, only few left operational.
In this traditional method bulls pull up water from lower ground level to irrigate the land of high ground level. Farmers use a large wheel and tie it above the water source. Bulls or oxen move the wheel and fetch the water up. These methods are known as water wheel, persian wheel, jhallaar, rahat or jhatta in Pakistan, India and other parts of the world.
