In a –71°C blizzard on a mountaintop, a 67-year-old woman lives in a cliffside cave stone house—all-stone walls and an old stone fireplace. She hauls ice slabs, fells and billets deadwood, rekindles the hearth, and cleans the cave. With a wooden bow she takes a snow hare, then gathers dry grass to feed her cattle and hand-milks a wooden pail of warm milk. Supper is milk-braised hare with greens. When wolf tracks appear near the stone steps, she builds smoky cone fires at the cave mouth and the dry-stone pen; bone-bell rattle lines whisper until the silhouettes fade back into the storm.
