Like many sixties pop studs (Gene Pity, Tony Christie, Tom Jones), Engelbert Humperdinck mounted a UK chart comeback attempt several decades after his first and last big hit here. His 1998 album, the imaginatively titled 'The Dance Album', featured radically updated dance versions of six of Engelbert's greatest hits, plus five new bangers written and produced by Grammy-nominated dance music producers Chris Cox and Barry Harris, AKA Thunderpuss (Madonna, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston). An English translation of the Italian song 'Quando Quando Quando', popularized in 1962 by US entertainer Pat Boone, was issued to support the album by The Hit Label in the UK. It came backed with a megamix, which utilized many of Humperdinck's big hits like 'Release Me' (UK #1, 1967), 'The Last Waltz' (UK #1, 1967) and 'Man Without Love' (UK #2, 1968), edited by Ultimix / Hot Tracks DJ Jim Thias. It was Engelbert's first UK top 40 appearance since 1972, but only just, as it peaked at #40 in January 1999. Still, a bit better than the #60 his ill-fated British Eurovision entry achieved in 2012!
