We are blessed to have Sikhi in our family from the time of Guru Amardas ji. We've had kirtan in our family since the time of Guru Arjan Dev ji. This is when Bhai Sata and Balvand refused to do kirtan, and the regular sangat started leading the kirtan. Before that, it was only for the people who belonged to Bhai Mardanas clan. My grandfather Bhai Jawala Singh was a 10th generation singer. My father Bhai Avtar Singh and my uncle Bhai Gurcharan Singh are 11th generation singers. We have about 500 compositions that have been preserved from the Gurus time.
Q: How were these compositions passed down?
They were oral, or written by someones own notes. My father and uncle wrote them in a way that can be read by anyone. We published a book. The real way singing is passed down is by listening and singing. The written composition is only the skeleton.
Q: What is unique about this tradition?
The compositions themselves will tell you. It comes in how people feel when they are listening. I feel that musical compositions are living. They are not dead. A tune will recreate the environment in which it was composed. These compositions were either composed by Guru Sahib themselves, or by the Sikhs in Gurus court. They take you back to that energy.
Q: Can you share an experience someone has shared with you?
I did kirtan with my father for 7 years. Many times I saw people crying during his kirtan. They used to ask him why they cried. He would say, look this is the power of these compositions, and they take you to the environment of the Guru. You feel the bliss, and lots of emotions. Some people tell us they felt like they went back 400 years. Bhai Mohinder Singh (Jethadar of Nishkam Sevak Jetha, Birmingham UK) was traveling in Kenya. Someone played a CD in the car of Bhai Avtar Singh. He had never heard Bhai Avtar Singh before. Mohinder Singh said that he didn't know why but that Bhai Avtar Singh must be about 400 years old. Later he met Bhai Avtar Singh, and shared that experience. Bhai Avtar Singh told him that its the age of the compositions when he felt.
