India marks its 77th Republic Day with the annual grand parade in the heart of its capital. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited the European Union’s top two officials, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, as guests of honour for the nationwide event's celebrations.
At the EU-India summit the next day, the two sides are expected to sign a range of agreements, including the long-stalled Free Trade Agreement. For Brussels, this is an opportunity to reduce its reliance on Chinese rare-earth supplies, while for New Delhi, it is about safeguarding its strategic autonomy amid Beijing’s growing regional influence. This realignment also comes as both sides are trying to navigate the chaos unleashed by the US President's foreign policy. After almost 20 years of negotiations, is this the moment for India and the EU to finally seal the deal?
